Asking All the Right Questions

When people ask me where I'm from, I give a longer answer than most: "I've lived all over - born in Oregon and lived in Florida, California, Rhode Island, Texas and lots of states in between."

Sometimes people 'ooh' and 'ahh' over my adventurously lucky childhood. So I set them straight with my favorite line in the "Where are you from?" script I've been reciting for years: "I changed schools more than 18 times before I graduated."

My parents insist it was good for me, but they didn't have to make my friends. That often annual challenge was up to a shy girl embarrassed to speak to strangers, yet forced to do so because strangers certainly weren't going out of their way to speak to her.

Thankfully, after years of trial and error, I discovered a conversational trick.

Kids may not have wanted to talk to me, but they almost always wanted to talk about themselves. I lured them in with a question, and kept them there with more.

Now, what was once a strategy for making friends for myself is a strategy for making friends for your business or organization.
