"Vote for Meredith Simonds"

After being the "new kid" for twelve long years of moving around, going to college was a dream. We were all new kids trying to make friends, which meant I was finally on an even playing field, and determined to make sure everyone knew my name.

Though I don't recall having ever been elected to office for any class or organization, I decided to run for the Student Government Association. This being my first campaign, I didn't know what to expect so I expected the worst - that winning this was going to take a "big idea" ... literally.

On mammoth pieces of butcher-block paper a couple of friends and I painted "Vote for Meredith Simonds" in bright block letters and plastered these "billboards" all over campus. I made flyers too with my name as big as the letter-size paper would allow.

I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best, just counting the hours until my signs would be dwarfed by my competitors. Only that never happened. Yes, there were other signs, but none as big or numerous as mine. Everywhere I looked I saw my name, which was a little embarrassing ... that is until I won.

Though serving on the Student Government Association wasn't nearly as fun as running and winning, I learned something relevant to the promotional work I do today.

Whether you've been in business for 10 years or just 10 days, all it takes is a "big idea" to make you stand out from your competitors through flyers, news releases, brochures, business cards, catalogs, ads and any other promotional items you need to reach and keep your target audience.
